I'm moving to Steamboat Springs, Colorado!

Exciting developments are on the horizon: I've secured a position at Steamboat Springs Resorts and have committed to a year-long lease.

During the last two days of my 23-24 snowboarding season, I experienced the unique atmosphere of Steamboat, complete with its renowned "Champagne Powder®" and diverse terrain—a dream realized. The chance to discover nearby resorts such as Copper and Winter Park adds to the anticipation. Steamboat promises an incredible journey with its stunning scenery and an abundance of thrilling activities. Among my favorites is the Strawberry Hot Springs, and with access to over 600 bike trails, adventure is never far. My new apartment is ideally situated by the river and a bike path, offering a scenic commute to work

As I approach my third snowboarding season, I'm committed to spending significant time on the slopes. I'm keen to get acquainted with Steamboat and other resorts, honing my skills to make the most of my snowboarding experiences. This also presents an opportunity to meet a wide variety of people. Above all, creating lasting memories and enjoying the moments is my top priority.

Strawberry Hot Springs

The concept of residing in Steamboat Springs could also address the dilemma of finding a winter abode that allows for snowboarding, in addition to the fact that I need to undertake several weeks of repairs on Van6ie. Initially, my plan was to stay for only six months, but given the housing prices, opting for a year's lease seemed more practical. All the feedback I've received about living in Steamboat has been positive.

So let the adventure begin❤️

I hope this message serves as inspiration for you to chase a dream you've always harbored. Thank you for making the time to check on us. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated..

Getting Prepared!

Indeed, preparing to live in my van and embark on travels is my next step.

My initial focus was on determining the affordability of van living.

Following my recent divorce, I received a modest settlement that enabled me to chase my dream of van life. While working part-time, I realized I did not wish to be employed during my travels in the van. Consequently, in March 2024, I resigned from my job to embrace an adventurous lifestyle.

Nonetheless, I recognized the importance of budgeting carefully.

Honestly, I'm not the best with money. I don't carry a large debt, but I do have financial goals. Budgeting is crucial with limited resources. In my marriage, we never budgeted and spent freely. Now, I monitor my bank account daily to track my expenses. Living without a fixed address has curbed my impulsive shopping and needless Amazon purchases, which were often due to boredom and depression. Downsizing has highlighted many unnecessary expenses and items in my life.

I've invested in a budgeting app to monitor my spending, bills, and financial waste.

To reduce costs, I avoid paid campsites, opting for free camping spots found through apps and other resources. I stick to simple meals and steer clear of luxury purchases like Starbucks coffee. I also compare gas prices for savings. Additionally, I've arranged for a friend to store four boxes of my items, as renting storage space can be costly

The most difficult aspect of my journey toward minimalism was reducing my possessions. Having lived in my home for over twenty years, I had accumulated a lot of items. It was necessary for me to sift through everything and decide what to retain, discard, donate, or sell. This task was daunting and time-consuming. Eventually, I managed to organize my belongings by season and sport, resulting in just one duffel bag of clothes for the current season. I placed the remainder into storage, realizing that only a handful of essentials were truly necessary. I've noticed that I often wear the same few outfits.

Along with downsizing, I took responsibility for the family pets: two cats named Cooters and Kanye, and two dogs named Dolley and Roxy. Initially reluctant to take the cats, I decided it was best not to rehome them. Instead, I arranged for them to accompany us in our new mobile home.

Dolley, a four-year-old pit bull mix, is affectionate and prone to worry. Roxy, a twelve-year-old terrier, often barks and enjoys creating piles with her kibble. Cooters, the calico cat, is a food enthusiast who's never short of things to say. Kanye, the black cat and sole male of the group, is inquisitive and likes to observe the world from the passenger seat as we travel.

In preparation for the trip, I fashioned harnesses for the cats and gradually accustomed them to wearing these for brief intervals. Over time, they became at ease with the harnesses, and Kanye even began to stroll on his leash.

In addition to feeding them, I provided treats for the cats while in the van. I've taken the dogs camping on multiple occasions, and on the departure day, all were safely contained and somewhat anxious. Yet, with each passing day, they became more inquisitive and gradually adapted to their new environment. Now, each one has found their own spot in the van and feels secure and at ease as we travel.

The dogs thoroughly enjoy their daily walks, appearing more at ease in the seclusion of the woods or when parked roadside, away from the world's bustle. The cats relish their sun-soaked naps. Meanwhile, I'm indulging in a flavorful chai tea latte, seated comfortably in my camp chair, gazing upon the majestic Great Sand Dunes of Colorado. May this message serve as inspiration for you to chase a long-held aspiration. I appreciate your time in reaching out to us. We appreciate it! Angie

What's Next? Challenges on the Road

I was aware that life on the road would come with its challenges, including downtimes, repairs, accidents, weather, and other unforeseen events.

Upon my return to Colorado at the end of May, I faced transmission issues and was eventually informed that Van6ie required a new transmission. Unfortunately, the parts were back-ordered indefinitely. The Boulder dealership had already been waiting for two months to receive the transmission for an existing job. During a particularly stressful period, I found myself unprepared for the financial burden of a new transmission. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty and a creative service technician named Jeff at Boulder Chrysler Dodge Ram who assisted me in getting a new transmission for Van6ie in less than the expected time.

On June 6, I picked up Van6ie with her new transmission and we headed to King Soopers to grab supplies before heading to the mountains for a weekend of camping with a van group I'm part of.  As I was exiting the parking lot, I was hit. Van6ie had been on the road for less than two hours. I felt sick. The damage to her driver's side was low and purely cosmetic. I've submitted all the details to the insurance company and am awaiting a date to drop off the vehicle. They'll need to dismantle the interior and clear out the van. I'll need to arrange alternative accommodation for several weeks.

The unpredictability is what makes life on the road beautiful; it's all about figuring things out on my own. Life can indeed be challenging, often resembling a complex puzzle, but I'm always searching for answers, which seem to become more accessible over time.

With my pets, my van, and a plan, I am content.

In the past, I've dedicated more time to caring for others and have overlooked my own self-care. Truthfully, I was unsure how to care for myself or recognize my own needs. In recent weeks, I've observed a transformation in a woman I barely recognized. Her anxiety diminishes in stressful times; she understands she must rely on herself, and she flourishes in that realization. She is resilient and radiant. She has captured the interest of charming, engaging people who appreciate her presence. Invitations for bike rides, performances, and dinners fill her calendar. She's embracing her sexuality and discovering a liberation previously unknown to her.  Passersby approach her, inquiring about her lifestyle, expressing their desire to emulate the life she leads. She has a life to share and stories to tell.

In van life, exploring a variety of options is crucial, such as consulting van life forums for ideas and resources. Cool Works is also an excellent job search website, offering opportunities in National Parks, resorts, and more. It's beneficial to compile a list of desired destinations, friends to visit, favorite activities, and experiences you're looking forward to. Ultimately, select a location that matches your lifestyle.

Stay tuned! I'll be housesitting in Longmont until August. I'm planning to see Santana, Foo Fighters, and several other shows in Denver during my stay.

I hope this message serves as inspiration for you to chase a dream you've always harbored. Thank you for making the time to check on us. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.

Discovering Dispersed Camping

Dispersed camping is my preferred choice. The challenge is invigorating, and the sense of discovering a secret spot is thrilling—and it's free! (sometimes referred to as "Wild Camping")

Dispersed camping refers to camping in national forests outside of designated campgrounds. This form of camping offers no services like trash removal and minimal to no facilities such as tables and fire pits (most of the site I have found and stayed at had firepits). Boondocking is another term for dispersed camping, specifically on public lands.

Many people use an app to locate such sites; I use iOverlander® for finding dispersed camping spots. I've been pleased with the app and have discovered many cool locations.

iOverlander®

First, I select an area and then check the weather forecast for the duration of my camping trip, as well as any fire restrictions. I also look into the mileage and the nearest town. For navigation, I use Waze® in conjunction with iOverlander®. The map also tracks your progress while driving. It may be slow, but it has never posed an issue. I strive to gather as much information about the area and my search objectives as possible. Landmarks, road numbers, and street names are useful in your search. If you are caravaning walkie talkies are a must.

The iOverlander® interface displays like this once you've navigated to your desired camping area. I navigate the screen using my fingers. The quarter-moon icons represent overnight camping spots, typically located in national forests or BLM areas, and are generally easy to locate. The filter is essential as it sets everything, so you'll want to deselect the items you're not interested in. However, take time to review it because it can be an excellent resource for finding a multitude of things.

After finding the area, I tap on the quarter-moons, and a page pops up providing details about what the area offers. I'm particularly interested in the terrain and the required vehicle type. This specific site does not require a 4X4, which I often consider a positive sign for my front-wheel-drive Promaster.

Wi-Fi is crucial for many people. I don't have Skylink; instead, I use my phone's hotspot and prefer to have at least 2-3 bars of signal strength with Verizon. Additionally, the amenities listed include whether pets are allowed, proximity to food, availability of showers, toilets, and whether the location is a tent or RV site.

This page provides GPS coordinates, indicates whether the site is currently open, lists altitude and distances, shows the last visit date, offers a description, and displays photos from contributors. Additionally, the mapping app includes a 'View', 'Share', and 'Copy Coordinates' section.

Now, it's your turn to utilize all available resources to locate your camping spot for the night, weekend, or even a week. Some areas permit camping for up to two weeks at no cost.

Remember, discovering these places can be somewhat nerve-wracking due to the element of the unknown, which can be intimidating. However, for me, this is part of the excitement. It's akin to being an explorer. I relish the journey, stopping as often as necessary to consult maps.

Plan ahead to ensure you have ample time to locate your spot before daylight fades. Be prepared to carry everything out when you depart. Additionally, I make it a point to collect any litter upon arrival and during my camping stay, ensuring I haul it out.

Thank you for checking in on us. I hope this serves as inspiration for you to pursue your dreams and take risks. Remember, you may not get a second chance.
